State records Spanish hog fish caught from frying pan tower

MOREHEAD, N.C. (WITN) – The North Carolina Department of Oceans and Fisheries has certified the first state record for Spanish hogfish.
The 2-pound, 11-ounce fish was caught by Dr. Robert Timson of Southport on July 17, 2021, offshore Frying Pan Tower, the department said.At the same time, he was certified by the International Game Fish Association as a world record for all-around fishing in August 2021, and he only recently applied for national recognition.
We are told the fish has an overall length of 18 inches (from snout tip to compressed tail tip) and an 11-inch circumference.Timson caught it using a custom CTS rod with an Accurate Valiant 30 reel, crab and 30 lbs of test Sufix 832 braided line.
In addition to being the first state record for Hogfish in Spain, the catch is also certified as the 2021 Full Fishing World Record.
The North Carolina Department of Oceans and Fisheries said the state did not previously list state records for Spanish hogfish, but created the category after Timson applied for a state record.
We were told that to establish a state record fish, the fish must be weighed using a certified scale at an official North Carolina weigh station, and anglers must send an application to the department, which will then be reviewed by staff. For national waters, the fish must be very large and within reasonable limits for world records.
