Energy price caps continue to rise at an alarming pace and many people in the UK face the threat of fuel starvation.
Every little thing helps, and in that sense, new seemingly modest trends like air fryers are getting billions of views on social media apps, including TikTok.
Home cooks seem to get an economical fryer combined with the versatility of the appliance. But how good are they and how cheap are they to operate?
Air fryers are essentially mini ovens that can cook anything from fried chicken to biscuits.
They have a heating element at the top of the device that creates hot air which is then circulated through the cooking chamber by a fan. This creates an environment where food can be cooked quickly and evenly.
They operate at high temperatures and high speeds, so they are great for making crispy meals and are claimed to offer a healthier alternative to fried foods that typically require more oil, such as chips.
A study by supplier Utilita and supermarket Iceland found that deep fryers are significantly cheaper than electric ovens.
According to the study, a rice cooker costs an average of 87p a day, while an air fryer costs just 14p a day.
Home chef Lisa Malion decided to buy an air fryer to keep costs down, and like many TikTok air fryers, she says she will never go back to traditional cookware.
“I’m thinking about not using my oven anymore, except maybe for Christmas. It’s like a message from God.”
