Rising 135 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, Pan Tower is a legendary building for many North Carolina residents, environmental explorers, and eco-adventurers from around the world. The tower is located in international waters, more than 30 miles off the coast of North Carolina. This is a distant time-lapse that allows visitors to escape the reality of the continent and immerse themselves in the tranquility of marine life. This structure is also one of the most exclusive and remote locations that Amazon delivers to customers.
The US Coast Guard built the Frying Pan Tower in 1964 as a beacon to warn ships of the nearby rocky shallow waters of the Frying Pan. When the Coast Guard originally built metal structures, they were expected to last no more than 50 years. Today, 58 years later, the wind and solar towers have become a unique site for historical and environmental research, serving organizations ranging from offshore wind and offshore projects to the world’s leading universities. Perhaps most importantly, it feeds a natural ecosystem for great white sharks, barracudas and some of the world’s most diverse marine life that live in the clear blue waters at the base of the tower.
Richard Neal, CEO of Frying Pan Tower, Inc., spends most of his time working with volunteers to support his non-profit organization’s mission to “restore, protect and preserve” the tower for the future. Neal relies on Amazon for items that help maintain and inhabit the tower: welding supplies, shark camera equipment, water hyacinth materials, pantry staples for hungry restoration volunteers, not to mention the occasional order of a biodegradable Fish Eat golf course. He and his volunteers hit the tower. on a sunny day.
“There are very few structures in the world like the Frying Pan Tower, so my mission in life is to protect it today, tomorrow and long after I am gone,” Neal said. “We are fighting against time to preserve this part of American history. The Amazon Fulfillment Network and all those working behind the scenes have played an important role in this work. Amazon’s connected fulfillment network and partnerships with third-party operators at a fulfillment center in Raleigh, NC, packed an order after Neil clicked “Buy Now” on a weld fitting.The order was shipped by long-distance truck to Raleigh’s sorting centers, where Amazon employees pack by zip code.
“Deliveries at Frying Pan Tower start in Raleigh, almost three hours northwest of the coast. We have a team of employees who work behind the scenes every day to prepare packages for last mile delivery,” said Tri Nguyen. Raleigh sorting center operations manager.
After Neil’s packages pass through Raleigh’s sorting center, one of Amazon’s third-party carrier partners picks them up and delivers them to the Cape Fear Regional Jetport in Oak Island, North Carolina. As the final stop for the delivery, helicopter pilot Willis Two packed Neal’s package at the airport and delivered it directly to the tower’s landing pad.
For Neal and eager volunteers from all over the world, the list of things needed to restore, protect and maintain the tower is never ending.
“My goal is to preserve the tower for future generations,” he said. “We couldn’t have done this without Amazon.”
